MAME 0.216

MAME 0.216

With the end of November in sight, it’s time to check out MAME 0.216! We’ve addressed the reported issues with last month’s bgfx update, and made a whole lot of little improvements to MAME’s internal user interface. In particular, setting up controls should be easier, and several issues affecting macOS users with non-English number format settings have been fixed. Some of the issues caused bad settings to be written to INI files. If you still don’t see the filter list panel on the system selection menu, try removing the ui.ini file.
This month, we’re able to present two unreleased 1970s prototypes from Italian developer Model Racing: their internal code names are Cane and Orbite. With the assistance of former Model Racing employees, the source code was extracted from the original disks. These games are incomplete, but they provide a unique look into early CPU-based arcade development. Game & Watch titles continue to be emulated, with the addition of Mario The Juggler, and the panorama screen Mickey Mouse and Donkey Kong Circus games in this release.
This release brings GameKing emulation to MAME. The system-on-a-chip used in this low-cost, low-resolution hand-held console from the early 2000s has been identified and emulated. Games for the colour-screen GameKing III are also playable. Acorn BBC Micro emulation has been re-worked to support internal expansion boards, and a number of additional peripherals are now available. ZX Spectrum emulation has been enhanced with better open bus read behaviour and support for two Miles Gordon Technology peripherals.
Of course, these are just the highlights. You can get the source and Windows binary packages from the download page.

Episode 9 REDONE ideas

Because of the Reddit character limit, I am posting this separately.
Episode IX - Balance in the Force:
If The Force Awakens was a bad premise executed incredibly well and The Last Jedi was an incredible premise executed badly, The Rise of Skywalker is a terrible premise executed horribly.
I disagree with the popular notion that Rian cornered J.J. because TLJ screwed everything up. I have many problems with The Last Jedi, but Rian took what could have been a visionless carbon-copy of the OT, and gave a new bold direction, an inspiring purpose for this trilogy to exist. It opened up so many possibilities for Episode 9, but J.J. took the easiest soulless path. Episode 9 should never have been the plot conclusion that reverses from The Last Jedi and attempts to be a thoughtless fan service finale that ties up the Prequels and the Originals by redoing Return of the Jedi. Episode 9 should have been the thematic conclusion that wraps up the motifs of the Prequels, the Originals, and The Last Jedi.
The Rise of Skywalker failed to answer the questions that the trilogy has raised. I am not talking about J.J.'s mystery boxes. Sure, I would have liked to learn how Maz got Luke's lightsaber and who Max von Sydow's character was, but I am talking about the thematic questions. What should the Jedi be and where should the Jedi head toward? What should the galactic government be after the failures of the New Republic? What is the will of the Force? What is the balance? Why is Kylo Ren's path wrong? What is the permanent solution to the chaos that has been repeated again? Despite branding itself to be a finale that attempts to unify the whole saga, The Rise of Skywalker answers none of these because killing Palpy again, this time he is 'dead' dead, solves every problem of the galaxy.
The movie fails to wrap up the 42-year franchise, it fails to wrap up what The Last Jedi has set up, it fails to answer The Force Awakens's questions, only raising more questions, it fails to be a fan-service movie, and it even fails to be a fun popcorn movie as its own. This is Spectre of Star Wars. It bafflingly misunderstands what the essence of Star Wars is.
As the title suggests, this new story is about our heroes exploring what balance in the Force means. Balance is not just killing Palpy again and be done with it. Here are the basic ideas. Let's continue The Last Jedi's message about the power of myth and everyman.
EDIT: I have incorporated EmperorYogg's idea.
The flames of resistance burn brightly! Word of mouth about the heroic act of Jedi Master LUKE SKYWALKER has spread from planet to planet and inspired the galaxy anew.
To suffocate growing unrest, Supreme Leader Hux has silenced all communication between neighboring systems. Defiance is punishable by death.
As the First Order struggles to maintain their systems, Lord KYLO REN rages in search of all records of the Force and anyone associated with it, determined to destroy any threat to his power....

Problem running php on nginx ubuntu (files get downloaded)

Hi everyone,
I'm very new to php and ran into some issue that I have been trying to fix for a couple of hours.
I have setup Nginx on ubuntu 19.10, and installed php7.4-fpm. But whenever I try to open a file like index.php, located in my root folder /vawww/html (so localhost/index.php) it will download the file instead of running it.
Nginx is not communicating with php7.4-fpm, is my guess, but I can not find the mistake in my configuration files..

Could anyone take a look and spot what would be wrong.
Below I've put the files, in order
  1. /etc/nginx/fastcgi.conf:
  2. /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params:
  3. /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/server.conf
  4. /etc/nginx/mime.types
  5. /etc/php/7.4/fpm/php-fpm.conf
  6. /etc/php/7.4/fpm/pool.d/www.conf
  7. selection of /etc/php/7.4/fpm/php.ini since posting it all is too long
  8. output service nginx status & service php7.4-fpm status

If I'm looking at the wrong files or something and the error could be located elsewhere please guide me in the right direction.
And if you already read this far, I would like to thank you for your time!

Returning to PC from my 2011 macbook pro. Need a quiet, dark PC for software development, VMs, patientgaming

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
The main justification for building a new computer is to replace my dying MacBook Pro 2011 as a day-to-day computer, and to be able to do more at home software development. I'm at my computer most of the day so I'm willing to spend a bit for things that are going to save me time and frustration: thinking specifically about 32gb ram and NVMe here.
This PC is going to sit in my living room day and night, so it needs to be quiet and dark. Zero interest in any LEDs, RGB or glass panel cases. Because there's not a lot of space for it, I think Micro-ATX is the right size for me. I don't anticipate needing too many drive or PCI slots, and if I'm wrong about drives in a few years buying a larger case isn't that big of a deal.
I'll probably be running at least one VM eventually, not sure if I'm doing windows host with linux guest or linux host with windows guest, but I'd like to be able to have the guest itself be a decent development machine. I prefer Linux as a development environment but understand windows is better for gaming and more convenient or other things.
I'd also like to do some gaming of the /patientgamers type. I have no interest in online, competitive games or playing the latest and greatest. Some titles I'm looking to play soon are XCOM 2, Witcher 3, Terraria, Subnautica, Borderlands 3. Those games alone will probably take me 2-3 years to get through.
I'll probably also use this as a host for backups, e.g. photos, TimeMachine, and maybe run a plex server on it.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
$1500, but I doubt I'd need to spend that much to meet my needs.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Within a week or two then
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Tower, WiFi whether by USB, PCI or on motherboard.
I'm doubtful that on-motherboard WiFi would be my best option: this PC sits at the opposite end of the apartment from WiFi and it's not easy to get it closer.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
USA, California. The closest Microcenter is 1.5 hours away, and given the pandemic situation I'm not willing to drive there except for a significant savings, e.g. >$300 off on the build.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Definitely not day 1. Probably not down the road, especially if it's going to cost more in noise.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Extra info or particulars:
I've talked to a knowledgeable friend and the settled on the following components around the core of the build, but I'm open to other opinions too
I don't mind upgrading components if needed over the next 3-5 years but don't want to have to do a brand new build before 5 years.
Many thanks!
